BOOTHAM STORIES
Children from the most economically deprived backgrounds usually have the worst educational outcomes in terms of qualifications and careers through no fault of their own. A chance to be at Bootham would see them follow a different path in life. Often these are the children that we see making the most progress at schools such as Bootham.
These talented and ambitious students enrich our school with their potential and experience of the world. If we are to educate young people who will be prepared to challenge and change the world, then they need to be educated in an environment which represents contemporary society.

Bootham Student 2010-2017
Since leaving school in 2017, I have graduated from medical school, served as chair of my University Students’ Union Council and held various roles in the British Medical Association. I have recently returned to Bootham as a School Governor and am delighted to support the new bursary programme; this will transform lives inside and outside of school. I was able to benefit from a Bootham education thanks to a generous bursary. I was encouraged to develop skills and take up opportunities which have influenced my professional and personal life outside of school. Bootham’s Quaker ethos means equality and community are part of the school’s everyday life and I never felt I was treated differently on the basis of different socio-economic background.

Bootham Student 2011-2018
I loved my time at Bootham. The teachers were amazing and everyone was so supportive. I was encouraged to pursue my interest in medicine and am so happy with my career decision. The school didn’t just focus on academic results but encouraged me to think beyond the core curriculum. There were so many different opportunities, whether trying new activities or take an extra exam subject – I took Astronomy GCSE as an extracurricular activity. I made friendships which I hope will last a lifetime and will always feel part of the Bootham community. I know that there are always people I can reach out to and I love meeting up with former teachers and other Old Scholars.
